Due to the capsize of the boat they were riding in, eight schoolchildren have died in the Volta Lake.
The victims were among 20 students traveling by boat from Atikagome to Wayokope, where their school is located, according to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).
Twelve students made it to safety by swimming.
According to NADMO, the eight people that died were five boys and three girls between the ages of five and twelve.
Ibrahim Wudonyim, the Sene East District Director of NADMO, informed Graphic Online that before they arrived at the scene of the disaster, some members of the local community and Marine Police had been able to remove all eight remains from the Lake.
He described how the boat capsized in the middle of the incident, which occurred at 7:00 am on Tuesday.
The dead have been sent to the fishing community of Atikagome.
