Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, paid his tribute to Pelé by attending a memorial service for the late Brazilian icon at the Vila Belmiro stadium, where Santos FC plays.
Alejandro Domnguez, President of CONMEBOL and a FIFA Vice-President, as well as Ednaldo Rodrigues, President of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), were there with the FIFA President.
The president of Santos FC, the only Brazilian team Pelé played for and where he spent 18 years of his career, Andrés Rueda, welcomed them.
The football world was in mourning as Pelé, the only player to win the FIFA World Cup three times, passed away on December 29, 2022, at the age of 82. For the wake, which was scheduled to last for 24 hours starting on Monday morning, thousands of spectators started lining up outside the stadium the previous evening.
So that mourners may pay their respects, Pelé's casket was positioned in the center of the field. His casket will be carried through the streets of Santos on Tuesday before arriving at the Ecumenical Memorial Necropolis cemetery, where he will be laid to rest in a private ceremony.
