To improve efforts to secure affordable housing, the government will establish NARS.

To ease the burden of high rent payments, Ghana plans to launch the National Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS).

On January 31, 2023, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will present the plan in Accra.

According to the Ministry of Works and Housing, the plan would, among other things, make rents more affordable.

"The Government of Ghana has created a program known as the National Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS) to, among other things, facilitate accessibility and affordability of rental housing by relieving Ghanaians, particularly the low-to-middle income households and the youth, from the unfair burden of multiyear rent advance payments. This program is part of efforts to increase access to safe, secure, and affordable rental housing for lower-income households and the youth across the country.

"The implementation of the Scheme is in fulfillment of the manifesto commitment by the Government of H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in response to the challenges experienced by Ghanaians, especially the youth, in getting acceptable residential renting, especially in big centres.

This problem, which has been becoming worse over the past 20 years, is brought on by the high demand for reasonably priced rental homes, which is exacerbated by landlords' inflexible demand for a one- or two-year rent advance from prospective renters.
