Today, February 28, 2023, Jean Mensa, Chair of the Electoral Commission (EC), and Kenneth Attafuah, Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority, are expected to brief the house on the proposed constitutional instrument for the upcoming general elections.
This comes after the Minority in Parliament protested a Thursday EC briefing since she wasn't present in the room.
The Ghana Card is being used as the exclusive form of voter registration by the EC.
ECOWAS/ECONEC invited Madam Jean Mensa to Nigeria for a peer exchange and election observation mission, according to a statement from the EC.
It's uncertain if other Commission employees would be able to deliver the necessary briefing.
Reports that the Chairperson, Jean Mensa, disrespected Parliament by declining a House invitation were denied by the electoral management organization.
It was revealed by the EC in a statement that Jean Mensa was already out of the country when the letter inviting the Chairman to update Parliament on the draft CI on voter registration arrived.
"The Commission, and its Chairperson in particular, is aware of the significance of the institution of Parliament because she collaborated with it for 20 years prior to her nomination as EC Chairman. The Chairperson will not show any disrespect for the institution of Parliament because she upholds it.
"The invitation from Parliament was still sent a day ahead of the meeting, when the Chairperson was out of the country. She would have made the meeting her top priority and gone to the Honourable House if she had known about the request before leaving.
Contrary to rumors that she had returned from her trip to Nigeria, the Chairwoman, Jean Mensa, has not yet arrived in Ghana, according to the EC.
Already, claims that a constitutional amendment making the Ghana Card the only registration document for elections had been ratified have been refuted by Parliament.
