When several retirees were picketing outside the Ministry of Finance on Friday, February 10, asking to be excused from the Domestic Debt Exchange Program, former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo was nearby (DDEP).
Since Monday, February 6, the pensioners have been picketing outside the Ministry in an effort to be excused from the Program.
The Ministry extended the deadline from Tuesday, February 7 to Friday for voluntary subscribers to join the program.
In advance of an extended credit facility from the International Monetary Fund, the government has already reached agreements with banks, insurance companies, and securities firms for their participation in the Programme. This program is intended to be part of the country's debt restructuring exercise (IMF).
However, it is claimed that the Government included pensioners' savings in its updated memorandum despite having told all active workers that their pension funds would be immune from the Programme.
Having toiled to save those funds, the majority of retirees claim that their only source of income is from their bonds with the government.
As a result of the government's apparent indifference to their demands, they started an action in which they visit the Finance Ministry between the hours of 10:00 and 11:00 every day to urge their claims.
Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo displayed a sign in support of the elderly.
Her poster reads, "We utilize our bond yields to pay our rent, medical bills, power bills, and water bills."
The decision by the Finance Ministry to include bonds of retirees in the Program was branded as evil and insensitive by the former Chief Justice in a statement to journalists.
