The government has been given a 30-day deadline by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to "provide fair and adequate compensation to all injured victims of the Ayawaso West Wuogon tragedy."
The NDC promises to "collaborate with the affected persons and take all necessary actions to seek adequate compensation for them" if the government refuses to comply with the demand.
On the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the violent turnout in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, the party released a statement on Tuesday that includes the demand and is signed by its general secretary, Fifi Kwetey.The NDC states that it is "appalled" by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government's flagrant unwillingness to execute the Emile Short Commission's recommendations and the government's own white paper on the subject.
Even stranger and more depressing is the Attorney-General, Mr. Godfred Dame, obvious refusal to talk about the Emile Short Commission's recommended methods for compensating the victims.
"To say the least, it is sad that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration has not yet thought it necessary to bring charges against those responsible for the violence during the Ayawaso by-election.The NDC said it stands with all victims of the violence and reaffirmed its unwavering resolve to hold those responsible accountable and pursue just resolutions if the party were to come to power in 2025.
